How to Get Gasoline Out of Jackets

Gasoline has a distinctive odor that makes its presence known. An accidental splatter of gasoline as you're pumping gas can cause your jacket to become discolored and stinky for the whole day. Although some odors dissipate naturally, gasoline is not one of them. A jacket that smells of gas will transfer the odor to other jackets while being stored in your closet. But you don't have to smell like a gas station whenever you wear your jacket. You can successfully remove the gasoline stain and odor but must do so carefully to avoid making the stain permanent.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the gasoline-stained jacket on a flat work surface. Cover the stain with baking soda to absorb moisture and deodorize the fabric. Leave the baking soda on the stain for 30 minutes before brushing it into the trash.

    • 2

Rub prewash stain remover on the remaining gasoline stains. Allow it to soak into the fabric fibers for three or four minutes.

    • 3
Vinegar naturally neutralizes odors while removing stains.

Wash your jacket in the hottest water allowed for the fabric. Add laundry detergent and 1 cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle to remove any remaining gasoline stains and odor.

Drape the jacket over a drying rack outside or near an open window. Allow the air to further freshen and deodorize the fabric as the jacket dries.
