How to Get Mud Out of a Mesh Shirt

The mesh weave frequently found on athletic jerseys and other sportswear allows air to get through the fabric and help keep skin cool. The rough-and-tumble play of many sports activities often results in mud and dirt stains. When mesh fabric becomes encrusted with mud stains, there's no need to panic. While mud stains are messy, you can successfully remove them. When you use the proper stain-removal supplies and cleaning techniques, you can get the mud stains out and have the mesh shirt game-ready.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the mesh shirt to dry. Take the shirt outside and shake it vigorously to remove as much of the dried mud as possible. Large chunks of dried mud can be removed by carefully peeling them off with your fingers.

An empty bucket serves as an effective shirt-soaking location.

Fill a bucket with 1 quart of warm water. Add 1/2 teaspoon of dish-washing detergent and 1 tablespoon of ammonia. Stir the ingredients with a spoon to blend the solution.

    • 3

Soak your mesh shirt in the ammonia and detergent solution for 15 minutes. Remove the shirt from the bucket. Rinse the shirt with warm water to remove loosened and softened mud.

    • 4

Lay your mesh shirt on a flat work surface. Spray the remaining mud stains with an aerosol stain remover. Let the stain remover soak into the fabric for two to three minutes.
