How to Bleach a Whole Pair of Jeans

Transform old jeans in your closet into a new look through the use of bleach, which permanently changes the color of denim and can naturally create an unusual pattern. Although chlorine bleach is typically used to remove stains on white clothes, the chemical lifts color from your jeans when used all over the pants. Once bleached, the original color of your jeans cannot be reversed, so dye with caution.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your hands with rubber gloves to protect them from bleach irritation.

    • 2

Fill a bucket with the hottest possible water for your jeans and add 1 cup of chlorine bleach.

    • 3

Ball up your jeans and submerge them in the bucket. Push the jeans into the solution until they are saturated with the diluted bleach. Place a lid on the bucket.

    • 4

Leave the jeans in the solution for one to two hours to completely lift the color, occasionally moving the jeans around with a large spoon.

    • 5

Remove the jeans from the bucket and wring out the diluted bleach. Run the jeans under warm water to rinse off remaining bleach and place in the washer.

    • 6

Set the washer's temperature to warm and the wash cycle to normal. Add 1 cup of laundry detergent to clean as much of the bleach from the pants as possible.

    • 7

Remove the jeans from the washer after the wash cycle finishes. Lay the jeans on a hard, flat surface to air-dry. Do not tumble-dry your jeans, as this can cause them to shrink.
