How to Get the Kerosene Smell Off of Sneakers

Kerosene's strong odor makes its presence known when spilled on sneakers. Even after the kerosene dries, the strong, gas-like odor wafts from the surface of your shoes. Rather than walk around with kerosene odor trailing behind you, it's best to get rid of the smell. To effectively remove the kerosene odor, you must remove the kerosene itself. You can get the kerosene smell out of your sneakers with supplies commonly found around the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle baking soda over the kerosene-stained area of your sneakers. Leave the baking soda on the sneaker material for 30 minutes to absorb kerosene and its accompanying odor.

    • 2
A stiff, scrub brush can remove dirt and dried stains, too.

Brush the baking soda off the surface of your sneakers with a scrub brush.

    • 3

Wet a sponge with dry cleaning solvent. Dab at the sneaker material to moisten the canvas and remove the stains.

    • 4

Set your sneakers in a well-ventilated area to allow the dry cleaning solvent to dry and the fresh air to circulate around your shoes.

    • 5

Pour 1 tablespoon of white vinegar into a bowl. Add 2 cups of warm water and 1 tablespoon of dishwashing detergent. Stir the ingredients until they're mixed well.

    • 6

Moisten a clean cloth with the detergent solution. Sponge the surface of your canvas sneakers to remove any remaining stains and odors from kerosene.

    • 7

Rinse your sneakers by dabbing them with a damp cloth. Air-dry your sneakers.
