The Best Way to Store Baby Clothes in an Attic

The biggest concern when it comes to storing clothing in the attic has to do with damage caused by mold, mildew and insects. To prevent these issues, it is important to properly pack the clothing. However, even when this is done, damage can still occur because of the high level of heat that is common to many attics. To safely store clothing in an attic, it is important to ventilate the attic to regulate extreme hot temperatures.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a container in which to store the baby clothes. This will protect the clothing and prevent the collecting of dust. Do not choose an airtight container, as airflow is needed during storage to keep the clothes in good condition.

    • 2

Make sure all of the clothes are clean. Unwashed clothes could attract bugs to the storage bin.

    • 3

Make sure all of the baby clothes are completely dry before storing them. Any moisture in the clothing can lead to mildew. Add a desiccant, such as silica gel, to the container to help absorb moisture. If using a desiccant, keep it from touching the clothes.

    • 4

Do not overcrowd the storage container or containers with baby clothes. Tightly packed clothing will prevent air flow, which is not good when storing clothing for a long period of time.

    • 5

Place the baby clothes in a dark area of the attic. If the attic has a window, keep the clothes away from it; the light can cause the baby clothes to fade after an extended period of time.
