How to Get Gum Out of Socks

Before throwing away a pair of socks that has gum stuck on them, try simply removing the gum first. If this fails, an effective method to remove gum from washable fabrics uses products most likely available in your home. These products, such as a laundry pretreatment spray, along with hot water, help break down the adhesive and sticky nature of gum, making it possible to remove.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape off as much of the gum as possible with the blunt side of a knife or spoon. To harden soft, sticky gum, place an ice cube in a plastic bag and hold it on the gum for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. After the gum hardens, scrape it off.

    • 2

Spray the remaining gum with a pre-treatment laundry product. Saturate the area and wait 10 minutes.

    • 3

Dab 1/2 to 1 tsp. of heavy-duty laundry detergent on the stain and rub the socks vigorously to loosen the rest of the gum. Rinse the gum and detergents off under hot running water.

    • 4

Launder the socks as normal with heavy-duty laundry detergent, preferably in hot water, and using a chlorine or color-safe bleach.

    • 5

Examine the socks for remaining gum before you put them in the dryer. If the gum is still there, repeat Steps 1 to 4.
