How to Remove Mold From A Gore-Tex Jacket

Gore-Tex's creators ensured the material would have high moisture-resistant properties. Specially formulated and unified layers of synthetic materials like polyurethane and nylon create fabric that is durable in extreme environments yet breathable for warm temperatures or periods of high activity. Although Gore-Tex resists moisture, mold can accumulate if wet Gore-Tex is left in a dark, humid and unventilated environment for a long period. If left untreated for too long, mold can creep into microscopic pores of Gore-Tex’s inner membrane. Clean mold before it takes over the material and starts compromising its water-repelling abilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the Gore-Tex item overnight in a solution of one part white vinegar and one part water. Vinegar should kill the mold, neutralize any musty smell and lift any stain left from the mold.

    • 2

Spray any lingering stain with a pre-wash stain-treatment solution; Gore-Tex recommends Shout or Spray 'n Wash brands. Leave the solution to absorb for the time indicated in the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 3

Wash the garment in warm water, using a detergent specially formulated for synthetic fabrics. The detergent should not contain fragrances, softeners or brighteners.

    • 4

Dry the item in a drying machine with warm heat.

    • 5

Spray the item with a coat of liquid water repellant. Find water repellants for outdoor, synthetic fabrics from suppliers of outdoor gear. The repellant should absorb into the Gore-Tex and restore any water resistance compromised by the mold.
