How to Clean Antique Lace Curtains That Have Yellowed

Antique lace curtains require special care and cleaning methods to keep the fabric in lasting condition. Yellowing on lace curtains can be caused by a variety of factors including stains, storage, exposure to pollutants or nicotine in the air. Since antique lace is delicate, machine washing and chlorine bleach can weaken the fabric. Use mild products to wash away yellowing and restore the bright white color of your antique lace curtains without causing damage or wear.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large sink or tub with warm water. Add linen wash or mild laundry detergent following the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Place the lace curtains in the sink or tub and press it under the water. Don't swish the lace, as this can cause it to wear. Allow the curtains to soak for up to two hours.

    • 3

Drain the water from the sink or tub and rinse the curtains under cool water. Squeeze the curtains to remove as much detergent residue as possible.

    • 4

Place large towels, blankets or quilts onto a flat, well-ventilated area indoors or outdoors. Lay the curtains flat on top of the towels, blankets or quilts to air dry. Flip the curtains when the top feels dry to the touch and smooth it out.

Store the clean, dry curtains in a zippered garment bag. Fold or roll the curtains around a non-acid tube before placing in the bag.
