How to Fix Stained Shirt Collars

The infamous “ring around the collar” pertains to stains on shirt collars. Body oils and perspiration collect on the fabric and create a noticeable ring. The best way to get rid of these stains is to pretreat the garment before washing it. Many commercial cleaning solutions exist to fix stains. However, there are items in your home that are inexpensive and effective in removing shirt-collar stains.

  • Shampoo
  • Grease-fighting dish-washing detergent
  • Heavy-duty liquid laundry detergent
  • Cup
  • Hydrogen peroxide

      Brush shampoo onto the stain with an old toothbrush. Another option is to use a dry washcloth. Most shampoos have cleaning agents that remove oil, dirt, and grime. Leave the shampoo on for about five minutes. Wash shirt with the rest of laundry.

      Pour a small amount of heavy-duty liquid laundry detergent on the stains. Rub the shirt collar together using your hands. Leave the detergent on for about five minutes, then wash the shirt.

      Pour a few drops of grease-fighting dish-washing liquid onto the stain. Rub the collar together to distribute the liquid. Wait five minutes, and then wash the shirt as usual.

      Mix ½ cup water and 1 tbs. white vinegar in a cup. Pour the solution onto the stain. Let the solution soak for 20 to 30 minutes, then wash the shirt in cool water. This method is also effective for getting rid of perspiration stains.

      Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water into a cup. Pour the mixture onto the collar stain. Leave mixture on shirt for 30 minutes. Wash shirt in cool water. This method is only for white shirts. Hydrogen peroxide helps to get out perspiration stains.
