Removing Oil From Satin

Whether you are dealing with olive oil, baby oil or motor oil, removing the greasy substance from satin requires fast action and the proper tools. The longer you allow the oil to sit on the satin, the more likely the stain will become permanent. In addition, improper stain removal will damage the satin beyond repair. Aggressive laundering can rip the satin, causing it to look worse than with the oil stain.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover a level surface with a thick white towel. Place the oil-stained satin on the towel with the oil facing up.

    • 2

Scoop excess oil off the satin with a plastic spoon. Sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda over the remaining oil and wait 15 to 30 minutes. The absorbent powder will help pull the oil out of the fabric. Brush it off the satin carefully with a soft cloth.

    • 3

Place a fresh white towel under the satin fabric with the stain continuing to face upward.

    • 4

Place several drops of stain remover designed for satin fabric directly on the oil stain. Rub the liquid into the fabric gently with your fingertips. Wait 15 minutes. Turn the fabric inside out.

    • 5

Launder the satin in a washing machine set on the gentle cycle with the coldest water temperature. Use laundry detergent gentle enough for satin fabric.

    • 6

Cover a level surface with a clean thick towel. Cover the towel with the damp satin fabric. Roll the satin up in the towel to safely squeeze the water out of the fabric.

    • 7

Let the satin air-dry out of direct sunlight for a few hours.
