How to Make Polyester Bedding Soft

Bedding such as sheets, comforters and blankets are often made using a polyester-cotton blend. Adding polyester to the fabric makes the bedding wrinkle-resistant. It also dries more quickly and is less moisture absorbent than 100 percent natural fibers, making your sheets seem cooler. The drawback of using polyester blends is that it is not as soft as cotton fabrics and can be scratchy until the bedding is broken in. The best way to soften polyester blend fabrics is to break them in before using them.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your bedding in warm water before you use it. Washing removes excess dyes that can stiffen fabric. The more times you wash the bedding the softer it becomes.

    • 2

Add liquid fabric softener during the rinse cycle. Fabric softener is made specifically to make fabrics softer. If you don't like commercial fabric softeners, a cup of vinegar can be substituted for the liquid softener.

    • 3

Dry the bedding in the dryer on the warm setting. If your bedding is 100 percent polyester use the low setting. The warm air and tumbling motion will soften the fabric further.
