How to Clean Yellowed Lace Satin

Years of exposure to moisture and air through improper storage causes lace satin garments, from wedding dresses to panties, to yellow. Bleaching the material is not a practical option, as it will degrade or completely destroy the delicate fabric. A safer alternative is oxygen bleach, a nonchlorine product that reacts with water to release oxygen bubbles that gently remove stains. Restoration and proper storage will remove the yellowing and help ensure it does not return.

Things You'll Need

  • Sink or basin
  • 1 gallon lukewarm water

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a sink or basin with 1 gallon lukewarm water. Pour 1/4 cup oxygen bleach powder into basin and stir until it is completely dissolved.

    • 2

Place the lace satin garment into a mesh laundry bag. Tie the bag shut and submerge it in the oxygen bleach solution.

    • 3

Allow the item to remain in the oxygen bleach solution for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Do not work the solution into the lace to prevent damage or breakage.

    • 4

Remove the mesh laundry bag from the oxygen bleach solution and pull out the lace garment from inside. Rinse the lace satin under a lukewarm tap until the water runs clear.

    • 5

Wrap the damp lace satin item in a microfiber towel. Gently squeeze the towel to remove excess water. Never wring the towel or lace satin garment.

    • 6

Lay the lace satin item flat on a separate microfiber towel and allow it to air dry completely.
