Fill your top loading washing machine with hot water and add one cup of household bleach. Run the machine on the "heavy wash" cycle while the bleach and hot water disinfect and deodorize your washing machine. Repeat if odors persist.
Deodorize your top loader with equal parts hot water and white vinegar. Combine the vinegar and water in a bowl and submerge your clean cloth into the solution. Squeeze out excess fluid and wipe out the interior surfaces of your machine. Include the dispensers, agitator and lid, and allow to dry. The vinegar smell will evaporate after a few hours.
Wash a few clean towels with hot water, laundry detergent and 1/2 cup of oxygen-based powdered cleanser. The combination of cleaners, hot water and friction from the towels will remove odor-producing grime from your machine.
Wash your clothes with hot water at least twice a week to discourage the growth of mold and mildew. Cold water does not kill bacteria and consistent use of cold water when laundering your clothes promotes growth of microorganisms.
Leave the lid open on your washing machine to promote circulation inside your drum. Keeping the lid closed slows moisture evaporation and promotes the growth of mold and mildew.
Spritz inside of your washing machine with a commercial odor neutralizing spray, which will leave your machine smelling fresh and clean. Odor neutralizing sprays will not, however, kill bacteria and mold, only deodorize the interior surfaces. They can be purchased at grocery stores, drug store chains and hardware stores.
