How to Get Rid of Wrinkles in Sweaters

Sweaters tend to wrinkle whether they are folded or hanging in the closet. Depending on the fabric, the sweater may have a simple hanger marker on the shoulder or several wrinkles through the entire sweater. While there are ways to prevent wrinkles from forming, once they show their face they can be difficult to remove. Take the problem into your own hands and remove the wrinkles safely and quickly using tried and true methods. Most manufacturers' tags will give basic washing and care instructions; therefore, always read the tag prior to removing wrinkles.

Heat the iron to a medium-hot setting. Lay the sweater on the ironing board and smooth out the fabric. Apply the iron directly to the sweater, with the exception of cashmere, by gliding it over the wrinkles in 10 second increments. Removing hanger marks with the iron is done best by smoothing the shoulder area over the narrow end of the ironing board, and applying the iron to the shoulder area. Iron cashmere sweaters by placing a thin towel between the sweater and the iron. Glide the iron over the towel.

Take the sweater into the bathroom with you while you shower. Close the doors and place a towel along the bottom of the door to prevent steam from escaping. Turn on the hot water. While you shower, the steam from the water will fill the room and help remove the wrinkles in the sweater. Use your damp hands, when you are finished with the shower, to smooth out the sweater. Leave the sweater hanging until you put it on your body.

Toss the sweater in the dryer with a tennis ball and damp cloth. Turn the dryer to a "Touch-Up" or "Normal" dry setting. Allow the dryer to run for 20 minutes. Remove the sweater promptly and shake to remove any wrinkles.

Wash the sweater in cold water on a "Permanent Press" cycle. The cold water will prevent the sweater from shrinking. Add a small amount of laundry detergent. Transfer the sweater to the dryer immediately when complete. Set the dryer heat to low and turn the cycle to "Gentle." Avoid drying the sweater for longer than 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove the sweater and hang if dry. Lay the sweater flat if the sweater is still wet.
