How to Make Your Own Scented Laundry Detergent

Doing a load of laundry can cost 21 cents per load for the detergent alone and more if your detergent contains scents, fabric softeners or additional stain fighting ingredients. Commercial laundry detergents also contain ingredients that may irritate sensitive skin. If you want a natural alternative to the ingredients in store-bought laundry detergent, mix up your own batch of detergent using basic ingredients found at any large retailer. There are also ways to make it scented.

Instructions

  1. Powdered Detergent

    • 1

Shave your bar of soap into a small bowl with a basic kitchen grater or knife. Use any type of bar soap you like and select a scented variety if you want the smell to remain on your clothes.

    • 2

Add 1 cup of washing soda and one cup of borax.

    • 3

Stir continuously until the ingredients mix and form a powder.

    • 4

Store in a plastic container with a lid. The batch makes approximately 32 ounces. Use one tbsp. per load, although you can add another tbsp. for heavily soiled loads.

    Liquid Detergent

    • 5

Grate a bar of soap into a saucepan. Add six cups of water and heat until the soap melts.

    • 6

Add 1/2 cup of washing soda and 1/2 cup of borax. Mix well.

    • 7

Pour 4 cups of hot water into a two gallon or larger bucket.

    • 8

Add your soap, washing soda and borax mixture to the water in the bucket and add another gallon of warm water.

    • 9

Add 1 oz. of essential oils such as lavender or orange to the batch if you want scented soap. Mix completely and wait 24 hours for the soap to form a gel consistency. Use 1/2 cup for each load of laundry.
