How to Get Oil Out of a Polyester Comforter

Oily stains can be frustrating to remove from any fabric, but this is especially true with polyester. According to Ohio State University's Information Extension, synthetic fibers, such as polyester, are particularly attractive to oil. As with any stain, the quicker you can get to it, the more likely you will be able to remove the stain completely. Even if you do not find the stain immediately, however, you can still try a few tricks to loosen the oil from the polyester and get your comforter back on your bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot the oil with a paper towel if the stain is fresh. Remember not to scrub at the stain to avoid spreading it throughout the material.

    • 2

Mix a few drops of heavy-duty laundry detergent with a few teaspoons of hot water. Dab the mixture onto the oil stain with a clean washcloth.

    • 3

Let the detergent mixture sit on the stain for at least 15 minutes.

    • 4

Wash the comforter with heavy-duty laundry detergent at the hottest water setting recommended on the care tag.

    • 5

Examine the comforter, after washing it, to see if the stain is gone. If the stain is still there, pre-treat it again with a few drops of heavy-duty laundry detergent and hot water. Wash the comforter again in the hottest water recommended by the care tag.

Hang the comforter on a drying rack or clothesline to air-dry. Drying the comforter in the dryer can set the stain permanently if there is any oil left on the comforter's surface.
