How to Bleach Down Pillows

Pillows can get dirty and discolored over time. If your pillows are made with down material, however, you may wonder if bleaching them as you might other types of pillows is appropriate. While bleach can be damaging to natural materials such as down, a quick soak can leave your down pillows looking white again, with minimal damage.

      Make your soaking solution by adding a quarter cup of bleach to a gallon of cool water. Make enough to soak your pillow in taking into consideration where the soaking will occur. For example, you can soak them in the bathtub or the washing machine.

      Soak your pillows in the solution for just five minutes, making sure all parts of the pillows are covered in the liquid. This will allow the bleach to work on any stains and soiling on the pillows, plus kill any mites that may be present. Dust mites, in particularly, like to make themselves at home in bedding, including down pillows.

      Remove the pillows from the solution after the five minutes have elapsed. Give them a quick rise in warm water and throw them into the wash. Add a mild detergent in the amount recommended on the detergent bottle. Run the washing machine on the gentle setting if not washing the pillows by hand.

      Air dry your down pillows after they have done washing. Once they are completely dry, both inside and out, you can place them back on your bed for usage.
