Bleaching a Dusty Down Comforter in a Front Loader

A dusty, faded down comforter can be brightened with the use of bleach to eliminate the current dingy color of the comforter, but requires the use of a large-capacity washer to effectively distribute the bleach. Check your down comforter's cleaning tag to ensure it can be machine washed, as some cleaning instructions explicitly state the comforter is dry-clean only.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubber gloves
  • Bleach
  • Large sink or wash tub
  • Mild laundry detergent

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large sink or wash tub halfway to the top of the sink or tub with cool water, and add 2 cups of bleach to the water. The water level must be high enough to soak the down comforter.

    • 2

Cover your hands with rubber gloves to protect your skin from bleach exposure. Submerge the comforter in the large sink or wash tub and leave it in the cleaning solution for no more than five minutes.

    • 3

Fill the large-capacity washer with warm water and set the cleaning cycle to gentle wash. Set the washer to an extra rinse cycle to eliminate all traces of bleach after the comforter is washed.

    • 4

Pour 3/4 cup of bleach into the bleach dispenser on the washer, and remove the comforter from the sink or wash tub.

    • 5

Place the comforter in the washer and run the washer through a gentle wash cycle. Promptly remove the comforter from the washer after the cleaning cycle is finished.

    • 6

Insert the comforter into a large-capacity dryer and place two to three tennis balls into the dryer. The tennis balls will move around during the drying cycle and fluff the comforter.

    • 7

Set the dryer to low heat and run the dry for at least two full drying cycles to thoroughly dry the comforter.
