Move the clothing outdoors for cleaning. When manually removing mold spores from clothing, always work outdoors to avoid spreading the spores through your home. If any moisture whatsoever exists on the clothing, allow the garments to dry in the sun before you proceed.
Wipe the affected garments with a soft brush to remove hardened spores from the surface. If one is available, you can also draw out spores with a handheld vacuum. You may need to brush the spores before vacuuming to loosen them.
Pour 1/2 cup of borax in 2 cups of hot water and mix it well. You must use hot water, because boric acid crystals will not properly activate in warm or cool water. You can find borax at most home supply stores.
Dip a soft sponge into the borax mix and scrub your garments wherever dried mold appears. Scrub the surrounding areas as well to attack any hidden mold spores that may linger, unseen to the naked eye.
Rinse the garments with cool water and leave them in the sun to dry. If mildew returns, or if you find any traces left behind, soak your garments for several hours in a solution of one part borax to four parts water. Next, rinse the garments and dry them again.
