How to Hang Sweaters Without Shoulder Damage

Sweaters tend to be heavy, and if you don't use the correct hangers they can suffer damage in the shoulder area or stretch out so they no longer fit. Many sweaters require hand washing, and others must be air-dried to prevent shrinking and to maintain their shape. Hanging sweaters up in a closet on the wrong type of hanger or allowing them to dry in this manner often results in bumps on the shoulders or stretching that detracts from a well-dressed appearance.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pick wide hangers made of wood. They are useful in hanging up suits, jackets and coats as well as sweaters. The width extends beyond the shoulders of most sweaters, thus preventing the unsightly bumps in the shoulder area.

    • 2

Pick padded hangers to hang the sweaters in your closet. These are available wherever closet supplies are sold.

    • 3

Invest in flexible hangers. These have foam that you can bend to fit any size sweater and help maintain the shape.

    • 4

Fold your sweater in half lengthwise. Drape it over the bottom bar of a wood or thick plastic hanger. This prevents indentations in the shoulder area and stretching that may occur from hanging a bulky sweater.
