How to Wash Flannel Sheets to Keep Them From Becoming Rough

Over time, flannel sheets lose their softness and become rough after washing them numerous times. They develop small fuzz balls called pills which make them coarse. Many people think that fabric softeners and dryer sheets will help linens regain their softness when in fact using them too frequently can have the opposite effect; they leave behind residue and cause piling, so leave them out the next time you do the wash.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your washing machine on the gentle cycle on a warm wash and rinse temperature. The temperate should be kept the same for the wash and rinse cycles.

    • 2

Pour a cup of white vinegar in while the water is filling up. After the water is about one-half full, place your sheets in alone.

    • 3

Let the washing machine run its cycle and restart the rinse cycle to remove any buildup from previous use of fabric softener or dryer sheets.

    • 4

Place the sheets in the dryer, after the second rinse cycle and the spin cycle have finished, without any dryer sheets.
