How to Clean Lipstick from Silk Taffeta

While lipstick can do wonders for brightening up your face, lipstick rarely stays where you want it to. It often "kisses off" on glasses, bottles, shirt or sweater collars, handkerchiefs and comparable items. While you can just wipe lipstick stains off of glass items, it can be a lot trickier when it comes to such stains on fabric. Silk taffeta is a special fabric that requires an immediate and strategic treatment of lipstick stains. If you act quickly, you won't have to take the silk taffeta to the dry cleaners.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Tape and Talcum Powder

    • 1

Cut a piece of masking tape that is 2 inches wide and 2 inches to 3 inches long. Press the tape directly onto the stain.

    • 2

Rip the tape off cleanly. The tape will pull the majority of the lipstick stain out of the fabric. Repeat once more.

    • 3

Sprinkle a generous amount of talcum powder into the lipstick stain. Tap it onto the stain with your finger. Shake it off vigorously and the remainder of the lipstick will fly off.

    Hair Spray Method

    • 4

Spray the lipstick stain with a light coat of hair spray. Allow the hairspray to set for one or two minutes.

    • 5

Dampen a washcloth with warm water. Run the wash cloth over the hair spray area, wiping off the hairspray and the lipstick.

    • 6

Turn the cloth over to a fresh side and repeat. Fold and turn the cloth again and repeat. The lipstick will be gone.

    • 7

Press a soft dry cloth against the silk taffeta and allow it to air dry on a flat surface.
