How to Mend a Tear in a Stocking

Just as you're pulling up a pair of stockings over your legs in a hurry one morning, you tug a little too hard on the fabric and create a small tear. This is an incredibly frustrating nuisance and one that you need to take care of right away. Runs or tears in stockings make the weave of the stocking deteriorate. While you can always replace stockings with a new pair, this can quickly add up. A more cost-effective approach is to repair the torn stockings you have and vow to treat them more carefully in the future.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place a square of tissue directly behind the tear. Do this regardless of whether you're wearing the stockings or not.

    • 2

Hold a can of hair spray 6 inches from the tear and spray it with a generous coat. Alternatively, coat the tear with clear nail polish, or if you don't have that, nail polish in a matching color. Run the nail polish brush up and down the length of the tear.

Moisten a cotton swab with nail polish remover and lightly dab it onto the nail polish or hair spray covered tear. This will remove the excess product so that your repair isn't as noticeable.

Adjust the tissue underneath the tear to ensure it's not sticking to the hairspray or nail polish as it dries. Allow the nail polish or hair spray to dry for three to five minutes and then remove the polish.
