How to Deodorize Smoke Smell in Leather

Whether you were hanging out in a smoky bar with your leather jacket or purse or smoking a cigarette around your leather furniture, the inevitable outcome is always the same: unpleasant smoke odors that won’t go away. Smoke clings to everything it touches and if it gets onto leather it creates a rather perplexing dilemma. Though leather is a durable material, it’s quite fragile when it comes to cleaning. If you’re tired of your leather item smelling like an ashtray, it’s time to take action in a manner that is both gentle on the leather and tough on the smell.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the leather item with a clean, soft cloth to remove dust and dirt.

    • 2

Wipe down the item again with saddle soap and a damp cloth. Wring the cloth out well to avoid oversaturating the leather.

    • 3

Wipe the soapy residue away with a cloth dampened only with water and is wrung out well.

    • 4

Remove as much moisture from the leather as possible with a clean, dry towel and leave the leather item in a cool, dry place to finish air drying.

    • 5

Place small leather item such as a purse or jacket in a bag and sprinkle baking soda into it before tying the bag closed and setting it in a cool, dry place. For larger items such as furniture, sprinkle the baking soda over it. Leave the leather item with the baking soda for 24 hours before removing small items from the bag or vacuuming up the baking soda from furniture.
