How to Clean a Hand Crochet Blanket

A hand-crocheted or knitted blanket is a family heirloom that should be preserved for generations to come, but often, the delicate needlework is destroyed with machine washings and harsh chemicals. A handmade blanket must be cleaned and dried with the utmost care and delicacy to preserve its shape and the carefully crafted stitches.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a clean sink or bathtub with cool water and a gentle detergent. If you cannot find gentle, all-natural hand washing detergent, baby soap can be used as a substitute.

    • 2

Submerge the blanket in the sink or tub and carefully agitate it. Do not wring, twist or scrub the blanket at all. For areas with stains of caked-on dirt, agitate the small area and carefully brush it with your hand, being careful not to warp the material.

    • 3

Drain the tub or sink, leaving the blanket in place. When it is entirely drained, refill the tub with cool water and rinse the blanket thoroughly. Empty and refill the tub as many times as is required to fully remove any trace of soap or detergent from the blanket.

    • 4

Lay the blanket flat between two towels and press on it to remove excess water. Be sure the blanket is entirely flat and be careful not to pull on any edges to avoid warping. Do not wring out the blanket.

    • 5

Lay the blanket in an area out of direct sunlight to dry. It is important that the blanket be left flat as it dries. If the shape has been distorted at all during the cleaning process you can gently tug it back into shape.
