How to Get an Oil Stain Out of a Sweater That Was Dried in a Dryer

Oil stains from butter, mayonnaise, salad dressing or face creams leave a dingy, greasy residue on clothing, but they can usually be removed by pretreatment with a stain remover or liquid laundry soap. Unfortunately, when clothing goes through a dryer cycle, the heat sets the stain, making removal more difficult. There is no special secret to removing oil stains; you just may need to repeat the process a few times for success. Do not put the sweater in the dryer until the stain is completely gone.

Things You'll Need

  • Aerosol stain remover product
  • 1 tablespoon liquid laundry detergent

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the oil stain with an aerosol stain remover. Wait 10 minutes to allow it to work.

    • 2

Apply liquid laundry detergent to the stain. Blot it gently to work the detergent into the stain. Wait another 10 minutes.

    • 3

Launder the sweater, using hot or warm water. Read the care label, though, because many sweaters are prone to shrinkage in hot water.

    • 4

Spread the sweater out and examine it. If the stain remains, repeat the process until it is gone.
