How to Remove the Burning Smell From My Clothes After the Dryer Burned Them

A burning scent caused by a dryer is one of the hardest to remove from clothes. You might be able to temporarily cover it up with fabric refresher or dryer sheets but to truly remove it, you will need to try some additional techniques. Start by repairing your dryer so the burnt clothes problem is eliminated. Then, get to work on fighting odor in your clothes.

Instructions

  1. Bleach Method

      Check the manufacturer's instructions for your clothing to see if you can use bleach.

      Protect your hands with rubber gloves. Mix 4 to 6 tablespoons of trisodium phosphate with 1 cup chlorine bleach and 1 gallon of water in your bathtub.

      Place the clothes you can bleach into the bathtub and cover them with the solution.

      Rinse the clothes with clean water.

      Hang them on a clothesline to dry. Do this outdoors, if possible.

    Non-Bleach Method

      Mix 1 cup of automatic dishwashing detergent with 1 gallon of warm water.

      Place the clothes in the bathtub and pour the solution over them. The clothes should be completely submerged.

      Let the clothes soak overnight. Drain, then wash in the washing machine.

      Hang the clothes to dry on a clothesline outdoors, if possible.
