How to Clean & Sanitize a King Comforter at Home

You really appreciate your king sized comforter during December, January and February when it keeps you snug and warm. However, you don't have much use for it in June, July and August as the temperatures rise. Don't just put it away. This is the best time of year to deep clean and sanitize it. Then you can store it, safe in the knowledge it's ready to stand between you and frostbite when those flakes of snow begin to fall once more.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Take off your comforter's cover if it has one. Place the upholstery attachment on your vacuum, and switch it on, but turn the suction down to the same level you would use for curtains. Vacuum both sides of the comforter to remove dust and loose dirt lying on its surfaces.

    • 2

Roll the comforter up and place it in a large plastic bag, such as a refuse sack. Take it to your nearest laundromat and place it in the largest washing machine on the premises. Select a cold wash and cold rinse cycle. Add a capful of gentle laundry liquid to clean it, and a capful of disinfectant to sanitize it.

    • 3

Ensure the comforter is rinsed thoroughly. Once the cycle ends, run it again, but do not add any laundry liquid or disinfectant. This will ensure all traces of detergent have been removed. Spin the comforter a minimum of three times to extract as much moisture as possible.

    • 4

Place your king sized comforter in the largest available tumble dryer. Use the machine's low heat setting. This will take some time, but it is the best way to ensure the comforter is thoroughly dried.

    • 5

Take advantage of the summer weather by airing the comforter outside when you take it home. Ask someone to help you shake it vigorously at regular intervals while it is airing. This will fluff it up, and ensure the filling does not form into clumps.
