Removing Oil Stains From a Satin Stole

Satin is a lustrous fabric originally manufactured from silk and is now created with other less expensive fabrics, including rayon, polyester and nylon. Caring for your satin stole correctly, no matter how it was manufactured, will maintain the weave’s sheen while removing unwanted stains, including oil and grease spots. This involves hand washing your satin stole or wrap, which is more labor intensive but produces effective, safe results.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the stole onto a flat surface and cover the stain with a thin layer of baking soda. Allow the baking soda to absorb the stain from the satin for 30 minutes before wiping it away with a damp cloth.

    • 2

Create a mixture of 1 gallon warm water, 1 tablespoon boric acid powder, 1/2 tablespoon baby shampoo. Stir the ingredients until they are well incorporated.

    • 3

Dampen a soft cloth with the homemade satin cleaner and dab it into the oil stain. Continue to blot at the stain until it is completely removed.

    • 4

Dampen a separate soft cloth with plain water and dab at the stole to remove the soapy mixture. Hang the stole on a drying rack or lay it onto a towel to air dry. Do not dry the satin stole in the sun as it will fade or discolor the garment.
