How to Make Powdered Laundry Detergent With Soda Ash

You can make your own powdered laundry detergent at home using soda ash, also known as washing soda. Soda ash is a naturally-occurring substance, so it is eco-friendly and also inexpensive. Using soda ash in the laundry helps to fight stains, remove odors and brighten whites.

Things You'll Need

  • Natural bar soap
  • Hand-held grater
  • Air-tight plastic container
  • Soda ash
  • Borax powder
  • Spoon
  • ¼ cup liquid castile soap
  • Baking soda
  • Grated soap flakes

Instructions

      Grate a bar of natural soap with a hand-held grater. Pour 2 cups of the grated soap into a large, air-tight plastic container.

      Add 1 cup of soda ash and 1 cup of borax powder. Mix the ingredients with a spoon.

      Use 2 tablespoons for each full load.

      Pour ¼ cup liquid castile soap into an air-tight plastic container.

      Stir in 1 cup of soda ash and 1 cup of baking soda. After the powders and soap are thoroughly mixed, add 1 cup of white vinegar and stir again. Continue to stir the mixture until the paste breaks down to a thick powder.

      Use ½ cup of this homemade detergent for each full load of laundry.

      Pour 6 cups of borax powder into a large air-tight container.
