How to Get Moldy Smells Out of Bathing Suits

The unpleasant odor you smell when putting on your bathing suit is likely caused by mold and mildew. If your bathing suit wasn't allowed to dry properly and in a timely manner after the last use, tiny mold spores formed on the fabric. When left unattended, the mold continues to spread and the smell is magnified each time your bathing suit gets wet. Instead of feeling like you're wearing a dirty bathing suit, you can kill the mold and mildew spores and get rid of the accompanying odor.

Instructions

    • 1

Place 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of table salt in a small bowl. Stir the two ingredients with a spoon.

    • 2

Lay your moldy bathing suit on a clean towel in direct sunlight, inside or outside. Spoon the lemon and table salt mixture onto any visible mold stains or areas that are particularly smelly.

    • 3

Let your bathing suit sit in the Sun for at least one hour to kill mold spores and freshen the fabric. Brush the lemon juice and salt paste off with a clean cloth.

    • 4

Drop your bathing suit into a bucket. Pour full-strength white vinegar over the bathing suit until half-covered. Add water to cover the remainder of the swimsuit. Allow your bathing suit to soak for 30 minutes to further deodorize the fabric.

    • 5

Remove your bathing suit from the bucket and empty the vinegar solution. Fill the bucket with cool water and add 1 teaspoon of laundry detergent.

    • 6

Dunk your bathing suit in and out of the detergent solution for one minute to wash it. Rinse the suit completely to remove the detergent.

    • 7

Lay your clean bathing suit on the towel. Roll the suit in the towel and press down to absorb excess moisture. Line-dry your bathing suit until completely dry.
