How to Get Smoke Out of a Soft Leather Jacket Without Dry Cleaning It

An old, well-worn leather jacket exudes attitude while remaining comfortable. With regular wear, the jacket will shape to the contours of your body and become one of a kind. If you recently wore your jacket to an outdoor barbecue, there's strong chance that it will smell of smoke. As leather is an animal product, it has pores which can absorb the smoky odor and trap it for weeks. Remove the smell of smoke using simple household supplies.

Things You'll Need

Hold the jacket up with one hand and smack it with the palm of your free hand to remove any collected soot or dust which may be contributing to the smoky odor. Shake out the jacket vigorously afterward.

Fill a plastic spray bottle three-quarters full with cool water. Top off the bottle with white vinegar and shake vigorously. Mist the jacket inside and out with the solution and allow it to dry completely.

Wrap the jacket in sheets of newspaper to help combat the smoky scent. Bunch up sheets of newspaper and place them in the jacket's pockets. Leave the jacket undisturbed for 24 hours.

Place the jacket in a large cardboard box. Open a container of baking soda, set it inside the box with the jacket and close the box flaps. Leave the box undisturbed overnight to allow the baking soda to absorb the odor.
