How to Wash White Clothes & Make Them Look New

Over time and with repeated wear, white clothing can give away its age by taking on a dingy appearance. It can become discolored with a yellow or gray tint that regular washing doesn't seem to remove. Although you might be tempted to simply throw away your dingy items, there may still be hope for them. Special steps must be taken to refresh your whites, but once you are finished, your white items will look as good as new.

Instructions

    • 1

Pre-treat any heavily stained items by placing them into a solution consisting of three-fourths of a cup of chlorine bleach for every gallon of water. Allow the clothes to soak in the solution for at least five minutes, but no more than 15 minutes.

    • 2

Place the clothing into your washing machine and fill the machine with hot water. Be sure that you have not overloaded the washer; the clothes should be able to move freely in the water in order to get as clean as possible.

    • 3

Add laundry detergent to the water as you normally do, then add three-fourths of a cup of chlorine bleach. The bleach will reduce the dinginess and discoloration in your white clothing, leaving it looking fresh and bright. Allow the washer to run through its cycle, then dry the clothing by hanging it from a clothesline or by using a clothes dryer.
