How to Get Wrinkles Out of Polyester Cheer Uniforms

Instead of tossing your cheer uniform on the floor when you get home, consider hanging it up. Regardless if the uniform needs to be washed, hanging it will help to prevent future wrinkles from the washing machine. Cheer uniforms typically consist of a separate skirt and top, or a one-piece dress, which are made from various layers of polyester. Pleated skirts are the most prone to wrinkles because they are more flexible than a dress or top. Most cheer coaches require your uniforms to be in pristine condition; therefore, take the proper precautions and initiative to get the wrinkles out before the next big game.

Instructions

Wash the uniform in the washing machine or by hand. Set the temperature to "Cold" and the cycle to "Gentle-wash." Wash the uniform with like colors, or wash alone, but never wash polyester with towels or blankets.

    • 2

Remove the uniform from the dryer while it is still damp. Hang the shirt up to finish drying on a standard hanger and the skirt on a skirt hanger. Place the uniform in an area with low moisture to complete drying.

    • 3

Hang the uniform in the bathroom while someone showers, or turn the hot water on and let it run. Close the bathroom door to close in the steam and leave alone for 15 minutes. Wet your hands and smooth the fabric of the uniform by pulling it downward. Repeat wetting your hands and smoothing over the fabric for five minutes. Leave the uniform hanging for an additional 10 minutes.

Transfer the uniform to a professional grade steamer to help remove the wrinkles if the shower does not work. Hang the uniform and hold the steamer wand 6 to 8 inches from the uniform. Glide the steam over the polyester to smooth out the wrinkles. As you steam, use your opposite hand to pull the fabric downward.

Iron out tough wrinkles. Flip the uniform inside out and set the iron to the polyester setting, or medium-heat. Glide the iron over the back of the uniform until the wrinkles are gone. If the top or skirt has pleats, then flip the skirt to the right side and iron the individual pleats. Be careful not to hold the iron onto the polyester too long to prevent burning or discoloring.
