How to Take Gasoline Odor Out of Laundry

Getting gasoline on your clothes is more than just a smelly inconvenience; it can turn into a downright nightmare. Notoriously difficult to remove, it also becomes a problem if you happen to throw the affected garment into the hamper with other clothes where the odor spreads, or if you wash it with other clothing. This only serves to compound the problem. Gasoline soaked clothing, even washed alone, can also make your washing machine smell, leaving traces of the odor on subsequent loads.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang or drape your gasoline-soaked clothes outside in a sunny spot for a little while if it is a nice day. This airing out can help reduce some of the gasoline fumes.

    • 2

Fill a bucket or tub, depending on the size and amount of laundry affected, with cold water. The bucket needs to be big enough to submerse the items entirely in water.

    • 3

Pour in the Coca-Cola and baking soda and mix it around. You can use your hand, a mixing spoon or just slosh the bucket around a bit.

    • 4

Add in your clothing and allow it to soak overnight, at a minimum. Allow it longer to soak if overnight does not eliminate the odor.

    • 5

Remove the clothing from the solution and place in the washing machine. Wash as usual.

    • 6

Line dry the clothes in case there is any trace of gasoline left; if so, repeat the treatment until the odor is gone.
