How to Dry a Handwashed Sweater

Certain fabrics must be hand washed and dried, otherwise the sweater could be shrink or be destroyed. Properly drying a hand washed sweater is important so as not to cause awkward stretches in the fabric. Unfortunately, it's not as simple as merely putting the sweater on a hanger and letting it drip dry. This process of hand drying is sometimes referred to as reshaping or blocking. It can also be one method of stretching out a sweater that's just a bit too small or tight in certain areas.

Lay a towel on a hard, flat surface. Lay the sweater on top of the towel. Gently roll the sweater up in the towel to remove any excess water. Don't squeeze tightly or try to wring out the water as this will stretch the fabric of the sweater. Unroll the sweater from the towel.

Lay out a second, dry towel. Lay the sweater flat on top of the towel. Use your hands to reshape the sweater. Necklines, wrists and waistlines in particular tend to pucker in the wash. Do up any buttons, zippers or snaps.

Let the sweater dry for 24 hours. Turn the sweater over and repeat the same process on the other side.
