How to Get Purple Mildew Out of Clothing With Dishwashing Detergent

Purple mildew, or any kind of mildew, found on the surface of your clothing is a disgusting discovery. Mildew develops when fabric is exposed to damp, warm conditions for a prolonged time. If left unattended, the spores will continue to spread, causing mildew stains and odor. You can get purple mildew stains off your clothing using dishwashing detergent, but must first kill the spores so they don't continue to grow.

Things You'll Need

  • Drying rack
  • Soft scrub brush
  • Squeeze-top bottle
  • 1 ounce glycerin
  • 1 ounce dishwashing detergent
  • Clean cloths
  • Laundry detergent
  • 1 cup white vinegar

Instructions

    • 1
As the sun dries the clothing it kills the mildew.

Drape the clothing over a drying rack that's been set up in a sunny area. Leave the clothing with the purple mildew stains to dry, exposed to sunlight.

    • 2

Brush the dead mildew spores off the surface of your clothing with a soft bristled brush.

    • 3
Reusable squeeze top bottles make convenient stain removal dispensers.

Pour 8 ounces of water into a squeeze top bottle, similar to the reusable plastic ketchup bottles. Add 1 ounce each of glycerin and dishwashing detergent. Close the bottle and shake it to mix the three ingredients.

    • 4

Lay the purple mildew stained clothing on a flat work surface. Squirt the homemade dishwashing detergent stain remover onto the stains until covered. Allow the detergent-based stain remover to soak into the fabric for two to three minutes.

    • 5

Sponge the mildew stains with a damp cloth to remove stains.

    • 6

Wash your clothing in the hottest water possible, using laundry detergent. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to remove any lingering musty smell from the mildew.

    • 7

Air dry your clothing on the drying rack.
