Laundry Room Sorting Ideas

Laundry is a task that can't be avoided. Unless you are lucky enough to delegate this duty to a hired hand or an allowance-earning family member, the steps of sorting, washing, drying, folding and putting away your family's clothing take up some of your valuable time each week. Establishing a sorting strategy for your laundry is one way that you can make this domestic chore more efficient and less chaotic.
  1. Multibag Hamper

    • If your laundry room is on the same floor as the bedrooms of your house, a multibag laundry hamper on wheels is an ideal laundry sorting solution: simply roll the hamper from bedroom to bedroom and collect laundry items, sorting as you go. Once you get to the laundry room, you are ready to wash the presorted items.

    Laundry Baskets

    • Laundry baskets are a useful sorting tool for separating laundry belonging to different family members. Give each person a basket in which to put clothing that needs to be washed. If you have space, purchase a second basket for each person but keep these in the laundry room for clean clothing to go into. As you remove clothing items from the dryer, fold them and deposit them directly in each person's "clean" basket. As each basket gets filled with clean, folded laundry, take it to its designated room and swap it for the basket of clothing that needs to be washed.

    Shelving

    • Shelves are an alternative to laundry hampers and enable you to use vertical space if your floor space is limited. Purchase shelving designed for garage and basement storage with shelves large enough to hold laundry baskets or piles of clothing being sorted. If you don't have multisection hampers for sorting laundry, you can use your laundry room shelves to create piles for white, bright and dark loads.

    Fold-Down Ironing Board

    • Install a wall-mounted, fold-down shelf for folding and sorting clothes. If you iron frequently, install an ironing board that folds down from the wall for the dual purpose of an ironing surface and a folding or sorting area.

    Reduce Laundry Room Clutter

    • Remove from your laundry room any items that are not laundry-related. While it is tempting to use this room for extra storage, random items that do not contribute to your laundry efforts instead impede them by causing extra clutter that makes sorting laundry more difficult.
