My Kenmore Elite Front Loader Has a Rotten Egg Smell

Well Water

• A rotten egg smell from a Kenmore Elite front loader may be the result of sulfur in the home's water supply. The Elite does not filter water for sulfur. Sulfur naturally forms in the earth, and when present in wells, it releases the unpleasant odor. Installation of a holding tank for the home's water supply is one solution, and a water softener or conditioner is also an option. If sulfur in the water is the problem, there is nothing wrong with the machine.

Standing Water

• The design of the Kenmore Elite front-loading washing machine allows a small amount of water to gather under the barrel. It is not broken or leaking when this occurs. This small amount of water is rinsed away with the start of the next load of laundry. If this water is allowed to stand for long periods, however, the machine may begin to emit the smell of rotten eggs. Naturally occurring spores begin to grow and bloom in the water. As this happens, the smell rises from the water. If this is the issue, using the machine more often will solve the problem. Instead of doing several loads in one day, spread them out over time so the machine does not sit stagnant for more than 48 hours.

Mold or Mildew

• The rotten egg smell in your Kenmore Elite could be a sign of mold or mildew growing inside the machine. Mold and mildew tend to grow in damp, dark places. The configuration of the front opening on a Kenmore Elite keeps light out of the damp barrel, giving the proper environment for the mold or mildew to flourish. This issue may be solved by running the machine while empty with a cup of bleach in a hot water load. Run a second cycle with the machine completely empty to rinse away any bleach residue.

General Dirt

• A musty or rotten egg smell from a Kenmore Elite front loader may result from general dirt and grime deposited by dirty clothing. The organic matter in dirt eventually begins to smell, especially after the machine sits unused for a time. On the door of the Kenmore Elite front loader is a rubber seal. Clean this area thoroughly along with the inner barrel, door and closing area with diluted white vinegar regularly to prevent build-up and bad smells.
