Does Laundry Detergent Cause Iron-Ons to Peel Off?

Comfortable fit and soft fabric have made the T-shirt a staple in many closets. Iron-on transfers take T-shirts from comfortable to versatile by allowing designers to apply any image they can dream up to the front or back of a T-shirt. These iron-on transfers take special care because washing may cause them to peel off.
  1. Basics

    • Compared with screen printing, iron-on transfers are a faster and often cheaper option for printing designs on T-shirts. Typically, iron-on transfers are designed on a computer, printed on special paper, and applied to the T-shirt with an iron or another heat source. Consumers can also design their own T-shirts using iron-on creation software for personal computers. Printing iron-on transfers at home may require a low-heat printer and special paper.

    Problems

    • Iron-on transfers can last through several wears and washes if applied correctly and properly cared for. If the iron-on transfer was applied to the T-shirt incorrectly, or if the T-shirt, transfer paper or ink was of poor quality, the iron-on transfer may peel off easily. Laundry detergent containing bleach may cause the iron-on transfer to peel off during the wash. Hot water can have the same effect.

    Solutions

    • To maintain the look of your T-shirt and to get the most life out of the iron-on transfer, you must take special care when washing in a conventional washing machine. Always turn the T-shirt inside out before adding it to the wash cycle. Use a mild laundry detergent free of bleach or harsh chemicals, such as a detergent made for sensitive skin. Wash the T-shirt in cold or cool water with similar colors and fabrics. Line drying the T-shirt will also help prevent peeling.

    Other Considerations

    • If the iron-on transfer is not applied correctly, it may peel or fade after washing. When making your own T-shirts, use ink and paper designed specifically for iron-on transfers. Apply the transfer to a new, clean T-shirt. Follow the manufacturer's directions for ironing the transfer paper. Using too much or too little heat can lead to peeling.
