Can You Put Plastic in a Cedar Closet?

Leaving your clothes in the plastic bags from the dry cleaners for short periods is a fine way to protect the garments from dust. If you intend to leave them in there for longer than a season, however, you may end up with humidity problems and fungus on your garments. In addition, if you have gone to the trouble to line your closet with aromatic cedar wood with the express purpose of protecting your garments, go ahead and use that natural protection to your advantage and don’t put plastic in a cedar closet.
  1. Cedar Wood Repellent Properties

    • Cedar woods contain natural properties that repel insects. Western Red Cedar, in particular, extracts toxins from inside the wood that prevent fungus from forming on the wood. Additionally, the natural toxins repel insects, like moths, which can be the bane of wool and other delicate garments in a closet.

    Moisture Prevention

    • Small, enclosed areas like closets can have a high moisture content, which attracts insects and fungus. Controlling the level of moisture is necessary then, to protect garments from an infestation. In addition to the natural insect repellent properties, cedar wood absorbs and releases moisture creating favorable, dry conditions for closets.

    Humidity and Plastic

    • When you cover clothing with plastic material, air trapped inside creates warmth that results in humidity inside the plastic. When you leave the clothing inside plastic for long periods, the dampness attracts fungus spores. If you have taken clothing out of a plastic storage bag and found tiny white spots speckled on the fabric, this is mold. Protect clothing from dust in the closet by draping a lightweight blanket or towel over the tops of the garments rather than plastic.

    Revitalizing Aromatic Cedar

    • Over time, the aromatic cedar scent in the closet diminishes. You don’t need to despair, as you can revitalize the aromatic cedar in a few simple steps. Remove the contents of the closet, line the floor with plastic and place a sheet of plastic in front of the door to protect the rest of the room from dust. Lightly sand the wood with 60-grit sandpaper. Sanding a thin layer from the wood releases the fresh scent of the wood beneath. Wipe the wood down with cedar essential oil to complete the renewal.
