Washing Machine Instructions for Delicates

Separate light and dark colors to keep colors from running and fading.

Fasten all hooks, buttons, zippers and other closures on your garment before placing it in the washing machine. This will keep it from hooking onto itself or other items in the same load, preventing rips and snags.

Soak your delicates in lemon juice and baking soda instead of using bleach. Mix 1 cup of lemon juice with 2 cups of cool water, then add 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Stir until it's dissolved. Let the delicates soak for at least 30 minutes.

Turn clothing inside out to protect any beading or design on the outside.

Place the delicates in mesh bags or lingerie bags to separate them from the rest of the load. If you don't have one of these, try using a pillowcase tied shut with string. You can even place small items inside of a sock.

Set the washing machine to the delicate cycle and use a cold water setting.

Use a detergent specially formulated for delicate items. These detergents are usually made without harsh chemicals and sometimes produce suds with small amounts of water and little agitation.

Take your delicate garments out of the washing machine before the spin cycle begins, as this is where most damage is done in the washing machine.

Remove your clothes from the washing machine as soon as they finish washing. Letting them lay in the washing machine will cause wrinkles that may be hard to remove.

Hang your delicates or lay them flat to dry.
