How to Clean a Hockey Glove That Stinks

The overwhelming smell of stinky hockey gloves is enough to knock you off your skates. The fast pace of a hockey game or team practice session results in a lot of sweat. While hockey gear keeps the player protected from harm, the thick padding inside traps sweat and odor-causing bacteria. Sweaty palms and fingers lead to odor buildup inside the hockey gloves. You can clean smelly hockey gloves and should do so regularly to avoid buildup of odor-causing bacteria.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your gloves after the game or practice. Place two to three silica gel packets in each finger to absorb moisture trapped inside the gloves. Leave the silica gel packets inside the fingers for two to three hours.

    • 2

Fill thin cotton gloves with baking soda. Twist the ends of the gloves and wrap a rubber band around each end.

    • 3

Remove the silica gel packets and set them in a dry location to air-dry for reuse. Slide the baking soda-filled cotton gloves inside your hockey gloves. Leave them inside overnight to allow the baking soda to deodorize the gloves.

    • 4

Launder your hockey gloves once each week for a more thorough cleaning. Pour one quart of warm water and one tablespoon of laundry detergent into a bucket. Add 1/4 cup of white vinegar.

    • 5

Open your hockey gloves as much as possible. Dip a small scrub brush in the detergent and vinegar solution. Scrub the inside of the hockey gloves to clean and deodorize them.

    • 6

Rinse the hockey gloves with a damp cloth. Wipe down the exterior of the gloves to remove surface dirt and stains.

    • 7

Prop the gloves up in a dry location outdoors or inside. Allow them to air-dry overnight.
