How to Remove Gray From Clothing in Storage

There are many options for removing gray tint from your clothing. Whites, as well as colored fabrics, may become gray over time, especially when in storage for long periods. Rather than disposing of your clothing, take a few steps to lighten and brighten them. Using a combination of products when washing your clothes will not only fade the gray tinting, but also brighten and clean your clothes without damaging fibers or fading the original colors.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large sink with warm water and add oxygen stain remover to the water, adding the powder according to the box instructions. You can use oxygen stain remover on all colored clothes, because it does not contain bleach.

    • 2

Place your clothing in the sink and allow soaking overnight.

    • 3

Place the clothing into your washing machine and add 1/4 cup of vinegar for a small load or 1/2 cup for a large load. Run the wash through the entire cycle on a warm or cool setting, depending on the fabric type. Refer to your clothing tags for recommended temperature.

Dilute the liquid laundry bluing in a bucket of cold water, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Laundry bluing is a whitening agent that does not contain bleach. Bluing will not fade colors or harm fibers in your clothing. Dilute the laundry bluing first and then add to the load in your washing machine. Allow the wash to run through an entire cycle on a temperature recommended on the clothing fabric tag.
