How to Make Washing Detergents With Essential Oils

With the price of basic essentials such as food and clothing always a concern, it's important to save money wherever possible. One way to do so is to make your own laundry detergent, which not only costs less per load than commercial detergents, but allows you to see exactly what ingredients are going into your detergent and decreases the chance of skin irritation. You can even add essential oils to the washing detergent if you want to make it scented and leave a fresh smell on your clothes.

Instructions

    • 1

Grate one bar of soap into a large sauce pan. Use any type of soap you want, as long as the scent is favorable. Add 6 cups of hot water.

    • 2

Turn your stove to medium heat range until all the soap melts and you have a milky looking water and soap combination.

    • 3

Pour in 1/2 cup of Borax and 1/2 cup of washing soda. Do not confuse baking soda with washing soda. Mix very well.

    • 4

Pour the soap mixture into a large 5-gallon bucket or other storage container. Add 2 gallons of water and stir to mix all the ingredients together.

    • 5

Add 1 ounce of essential oils to the laundry detergent, such as lavender, to give it fragrance. Mix together well and allow the soap to sit for at least 24 hours before using. It will turn into a gel-like consistency. Use 1/2 cup for each load of laundry, with more for extra large or heavily-soiled loads.
