How to Get Wrinkles Out of Mainstays Thermal Curtains

Mainstays brand thermal curtains, which help to block light and increase the energy efficiency of your windows, often have deep wrinkles in the fabric once taken out of the packaging. They can also develop wrinkles after they are washed and dried according to manufacturer's directions. Due to the thermal backing on these curtains, taking care when removing wrinkles is essential.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the curtains from the packaging and unfold them, or remove them from your curtain rod if they are already hanging.

    • 2

Wash the curtains with a mild detergent in your washing machine, using the gentlest cycle your machine offers. The gentle cycle uses low agitation, which will not only help to prevent damage to your curtains but also aid in preventing new wrinkles from forming.

    • 3

Dry the curtains according to manufacturer's directions. In most cases, Mainstays thermal curtains require line drying. If you are able to place your curtains in the dryer, start out with a high heat setting for the first five minutes, and then switch your dryer to a medium heat setting for the next 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 4

Lower the heat to the lowest setting possible until the curtains are nearly dry. Remove the curtains promptly, and hang them up until they finish air drying. Gradually lowering the heat setting as the Mainstays thermal curtains dry helps to release any deep-set wrinkles, while allowing the curtains to cool gradually so they do not develop new ones.

Lay the curtain out on a sturdy ironing board, with the foam backing on the bottom. Heat your iron to medium heat, and do not activate the steam option if you have one. If your iron has a spray button, empty the water cartridge prior to heating up the iron to prevent any accidental sprays or drips of water.

    • 6

Iron out any wrinkles carefully, applying the iron only to the fabric side of the Mainstays thermal curtains: ironing the foam backing can damage the curtains. If you are unsure as to whether the iron will damage the fabric portion of the curtains, you can use a clean, thin kitchen cloth as a barrier between the curtain and the iron. Simply place the cloth over the curtain, and iron over the cloth directly.

Hang the curtains immediately after you finish ironing them. Stretch them out on the curtain rod until they are cool to the touch. Placing the curtains on the rod and then bunching them to either side can cause new wrinkles to form if the fabric is still warm from the iron.
