What Is a Teflon Ironing Sheet For?

Teflon ironing sheets -- or pressing sheets -- are an excellent product to have on hand next time you get to work on an applique project. The sheets are designed to allow you to iron the applique on a high temperature without the iron sticking to the applique or collecting sticky residue.
  1. About Applique

    • Many people enjoy applique projects, which involve affixing one type of fabric or patch onto another piece of fabric. The actual appliques can be purchased at craft stores, and come in many shapes -- like hearts and flowers -- and sizes. With applique, you can turn a plain, ordinary T-shirt or tote bag into a personalized statement. Appliques are also often used on quilts to add some extra texture and flair.

    Pressing Sheets Basics

    • Teflon pressing sheets -- manufactured by several major craft companies -- are see-through, so you can make sure that you press your appliques onto their targets in all the right places. The standard size measures around 18 inches by 18 inches, but you can also buy a larger size for over-sized projects. Some pressing-sheet kits also come with a bonding powder to make an applique affix more firmly and easily.

    Using the Sheets

    • To use Teflon pressing sheets, start by turning your iron onto its highest heat setting. Place the item you want to affix the applique to flat on the ironing board, and set the applique on top. Then, place the Teflon pressing square on top of the applique. Press the iron firmly on top of the applique, and apply a little pressure as you iron over the applique for several seconds. Test the applique to make sure it is firmly attached, and re-iron as necessary.

    More Applique Tips

    • When doing an applique project, it is important to ensure that the applique you purchase is meant to be fused, meaning it has a layer of adhesive that will stick when ironed. It helps if your target item -- the T-shirt or quilt or tote bag -- is of a high-quality fabric. When washing your appliqued item, turn it inside out and put it in a garment bag or pillowcase before putting it in the washing machine.
