How to Clean Muddy Clothes

Mud stains can ruin otherwise good clothing. The wet mud soaks deeply into the fabric fibers, which may leave behind a permanent dark mark, especially on light-colored items. Mud is a type of protein stain due to the plant matter and clay typically present in the mud. These proteins actually cook and adhere to the fabric permanently if washed with hot water. Removing the mud from inside the fibers by pretreating the fabric first allows you to remove the stain completely during laundering.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the mud to dry on the clothing item. Brush off the excess dried mud over a trash can or outdoors.

    • 2

Fill a sink or wash tub with 1 quart of warm water. Add 1 teaspoon ammonia and ½ teaspoon of liquid dish soap to the water.

    • 3

Soak the muddy clothing in the water for 15 minutes. Rub the stain with a clean towel to loosen the mud. Soak for an additional 15 minutes for fresh mud stains or for up to two hours for old stains.

    • 4

Wash the clothing in the washing machine with warm water. Use a detergent suitable for the fabric type.

    • 5

Inspect the item for remaining mud stains after washing but before drying. If staining remains, soak the item with an enzyme stain remover product, following package instructions. Wash the item in the machine a second a time before drying as usual.
