How to Get Rid of Glued Stickers on Sweaters

Stickers, such as name tags, can leave behind stubborn glue stains on knit sweaters. The sticker clings to the yarn fibers, making it difficult to pull it off without causing a snag or pull in the sweater. Sticker glue is a type of protein stain. These stains melt under heat, which causes them to penetrate and adhere deeply into the yarn of the sweater. Inspect sweaters before throwing them in the wash to prevent the heat from hot water or the dryer from melting the glue.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the sticker in cold water for five to 10 minutes. Avoid hot water, as this can make the glue permanent. Hot water can also shrink wool sweaters.

    • 2

Peel the paper part of the sticker from the sweater. The water loosens the paper so it lifts easily from the item.

    • 3

Soak a white cloth in vinegar. Lay the cloth over the glue and press on it so it is in full contact with the glue. Leave in place for five minutes. The vinegar loosens the adhesive without damaging the yarn in the sweater.

    • 4

Rub the glue with the vinegar-soaked cloth, removing as much adhesive as possible. Rinse the vinegar and loosened glue from the sweater with cold water.

    • 5

Dampen a clean cloth with dry cleaning solvent if some glue remains on the sweater. Rub the solvent into the stain until the remainder is removed. Launder the sweater as indicated on the fabric care label.
