How to Make Doing Laundry a Pleasure

Many people put off doing their laundry properly, letting it pile up in baskets or lying in the laundry room waiting to be ironed. While doing laundry will likely never be at the top of most people's lists of fun things to do, there's no reason it has to feel painful. If you make your laundry room a beautiful place where you want to spend time and invest in machines and detergent that you love, the process may become more relaxing than stressful.

Build a laundry room that makes you feel happy and comfortable. Install enough shelving and cupboards to keep all of your laundry tools neat and organized. If the room is uncluttered you will feel more peaceful when doing laundry. White is a classic color for laundry rooms because it doesn't clash with the colors of the clothes. If a pop of color will make your laundry experience more pleasurable, add it sparingly by using it on a single wall, on the counter tops or with the addition of colorful accessories.

Invest in a top line washer and dryer set. If you're constantly dealing with a machine that breaks down or doesn't get clothes clean, doing laundry will become stressful. Choose a front-load washer, which will clean your clothes more gently and effectively. Steam washers and dryers decrease wrinkles, which may eliminate the need for ironing. The washer and dryer is another place where you can add a blast of color, so to maximize your pleasure, choose a machine that looks as good as it cleans.

Use soaps and detergent that appeal to your sense of smell. There are many commercial detergents that are marketed as having aromatherapeutic properties. If you can't find a detergent that suits you, buy some essential oil such as lavender or eucalyptus and add it to a non-scented detergent. In addition to smelling good, many essential oils are effective in warding off pests like dust mites, ticks and fleas.

Add some entertainment to your laundry room. You may enjoy otherwise tedious tasks like folding or ironing clothes if there's a television or radio in the laundry room. Engross yourself in some books on tape and you may even forget that you're doing laundry.

Put away your laundry immediately after washing it and clean your laundry room after each load. While you may feel inclined to move onto something else and throw your clean laundry in a basket, you will thank yourself for cleaning up the laundry room the next time you start in on a hamper full of dirty clothes.
